Strategic networking is the summit’s objective. Sessions will bring together local and regional leaders, from across Europe to discuss European and National institutions how to involve the citizens and stakeholders in co-promoting smarter small cities, towns, villages and regions. The event is a unique opportunity to network with emerging players, to share emerging ideas and to get involved with emerging regions and cities.
During 3-9 of May, key-notes and case-studies presentations will be delivered. After interventions, the debate will be organized where participants’ contribution is welcome. Partnerships are expected to emerge and to be followed-up during the upcoming financial period. The dialog to be developed during the event is inspired on the case-studies to be presented and driven by the institutional presentations to be delivered.

The sessions will consist of short pitches of various organisations and bodies related to smart communities. After interventions, the debate will be organized where participants’ contribution is welcome. The dialog to be developed during the event is the inspiration for future collaborations and making the real impact in digital and sustainable transformation of communities.

SUM UP SESSION WEDNESDAY, 5 MAY 2021

Following 12 tables discussion the sum-up session will focus on deriving the best practices and insights from the past days’ discussions determining the essence of smart communities in Europe. Top experts, researchers, policy analysts and invited Policy officers from European Commission will comment on the results of the tables debates providing an opportunity to understand better the current state-of-play and look a bit in the future of smart communities. STRATEGY SESSION WEDNESDAY, 5 MAY 2021

Collaboration among a range of stakeholders such as academia, industry, the public sector and civil society is crucial to stimulate innovation and to develop sustainable and effective solutions. Such networks are, therefore, drivers of change and innovation since they allow to facilitate interactions between members. The session will be focused on the connections building between various networks of stakeholders related to smart communities’ strategy development. SMARTOMORROW THURSDAY, 6 MAY 2021

The main goal of the Smart Communities initiative is to enable cities and rural areas to manage their assets efficiently, investing in innovation and creativity to promote sustainable and inclusive development. This requires a certain level of commitment and collaboration. The session’s mission is to initiate a fruitful debate among mayors and community representatives around ways of tacking such issues as: climate change, reducing poverty, and increasing citizens’ participation. This unique session will allow to listen to real decision-makers and leaders about their stance on more community-centric development of rural and urban living communities. With the interventions from top European politicians this session will open the opportunity to announce the SmarTomorrow initiative going live.

HIGH LEVEL SESSION THURSDAY, 6 MAY 2021

This session provides an exceptional opportunity to listen to Regional Representatives and Politicians across Europe sharing their best practices on how to involve citizens more effectively, with the support of local and regional authorities. Join to get insights about smart communities’ future from the Ministers, Government officials and Permanent Representatives of EU countries. The session will be divided into two parts: the first is related to the European context and the second focuses specifically on the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU. Portugal takes over this Presidency with major priorities for the EU: to promote a recovery leveraged by the climate and digital transitions, taking a leading role in climate action and promoting a digital transformation in the service of people.

REGIONAL LEADERSHIP FRIDAY, 7 MAY 2021

It is now more important than ever to achieve high digital connectivity for all EU regions and cities – including rural areas – and to ensure that people and companies can adapt to the crisis and the changing needs of the labour market. The session will showcase how regional entities enhance their learning capacities, innovativeness, competitiveness as well as their level of cooperation with other European regions. With the intervention from European Commission, European Parliament, Committee of Regions representatives we can dive into the latest updates on the regional leadership in tackling emerging challenges to get inspired for creating better strategies for digital and innovative future of smart communities.
