The European Regions for Smart Communities summit, under Portuguese Presidency of European Union, took place in Évora (Alentejo, Portugal) and online, between 3 and 9 of May, 2021.

Due to the current situation of Covid-19 pandemic and national health restrictions, this European Regions for Smart Communities Summit will be held partly online and partly in the city of Évora. The flexibility of the modality will enable us to make the best out of the situation and full access to the event will be provided virtually.
This Summit is the celebration of the success and achievements across Smart Communities and a opportunity for mutually commit to cooperation. It will gather local and regional leaders from across Europe to discuss how to involve the citizens and stakeholders in co-promoting smarter small cities, towns, villages and regions for a better tomorrow. Portugal, as a current holder of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, is committed to play positive and flexible role to promote cooperation and achieve tangible results in economic recovery and lead the European Union out of the crisis.
This Summit is welcoming:
The Summit will host: Mayors, Regional Presidents as well as other elected politicians from across Europe who will show best practices on how to involve citizens more effectively, with the support of local and regional authorities. It will be followed by technical and thematic sessions, projects meeting and networking, artistic performances, social/cultural time, visits in the Alentejo Region and at the end of the week by celebrating the Day of Europe.
The Summit is organised by the H2020-AURORAL project led by CCDR Alentejo, with the support from Alentejo Europe Initiative, Open & Agile Smart Cities (OASC), ADRAL - Regional Development Agency of Alentejo and IrRADIARE Science for Evolution.
At the Summit some sessions will take place at Espinheiro Convent Hotel, located in Évora.
The Convent of Nossa Senhora do Espinheiro is an old monastery of the Order of São Jerónimo that is located on the outskirts of the Canaviais neighbourhood, two kilometers from the historic center of the city and Évora District, in Portugal. It is a convent that dates back to the 15th century, nowadays re-qualified as a luxury hotel. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
